What our alumnus Mohammad Ahmad (Jemmy) has been doing…
Mohammad Ahmad (Jemmy) has been working with a programme that focuses on reaching out to community centres in refugee camps and collaborating with them in a joint event to pass on letters sent from young people in other countries. It’s an opportunity for the kids to reflect on the meaning behind the letters they get from all over the world.
Being a refugee can often feel very isolating. It can be really eye opening to know that in this current hostile climate, your life is touching and resonating with so many others across the world. They also focus on ways to give back to the community, and of course have fun activities, like a puppet show, a comedy show, activities, games, etc.
In the last workshop, the kids at the community centre didn’t just want to take the letters. They wanted to give back in a way. So, in coming sessions, the kids will be writing their own letters as well, to reflect on the ones they have received from the other kids.
The last workshop was with around 20 kids from Balata camp in Nablus. We had lots of fun activities and talked about the letters we have for them. Then we asked them some questions about where they are from originally, and their hopes to return some day.
The kids were so happy when they played the various activities and when they felt that there are some other kids from other countries who are standing in solidarity with them and actually care about their plight!
We were able to do this session through the ‘Letters of Love’ project and through donations of materials left over from previous Encompass Trust projects and programs.
