After waiting many long months (delivery logistics), this week ‘Letters from Palestine’ participants finally received responses to their letters from UK students via Solutions Not Sides. Participants were hosted in Encompass Palestine’s new centre to open their letters:
“As they arrived, the participants’ eyes widened to see the many envelopes on the table, decorated with stars, and their names written on them. The excitement to open them was palpable, however, they politely took a seat and waited for instructions. One by one they came to the letter table, searched for their name, and happily trotted back to their seat. While waiting for the others to select their letters, the lucky first recipients examined their envelopes carefully, even trying to see glimpses of pictures or writing through the cellophane windows on the front. At last all the letters had been collected and permission was given for everyone to open their envelopes and delve into the world of a British youth.
The well written, informative and supportive letters were meticulously read several times in silence. Photos, drawings and other inserts were shared with the group, as well as names, origins and the support shared by the authors.
Some had a bit of trouble with new vocabulary and handwriting, but Mohammad, Adel and Khalto Karen were happy to help. Some participants read their letters aloud, while most others chose to cherish their treasure privately.
Then Adel chose to lead an activity he had experienced at the Journey of Understanding in Cyprus this past March. He tasked the group with creating masks that represent the way they see themselves; the way they want others to see them. They did this with drawings, symbols and words. When finished, they were asked to create a moving museum, walking around looking at each others’ masks and asking the creators about them.
We ended with a promise to meet-up again after exams, with finished letters in hand. We also discussed creating short videos with their phones, representing their communities through the five senses, and sharing with their new friends in England.” – Karen AbuZant, Palestinian Coordinator
